Is Gangnam Actually the Best Place to Get Plastic Surgery in Korea?

Just a heads up — I'm not a doctor or medical professional. Everything I share here is based on my own personal experiences, research, and things I've come across on YouTube and social media that resonated with me. Please always consult a qualified medical professional before making any decisions about treatments or procedures. 😊

Everyone says "go to Gangnam" like it's the default answer. But after going through the process myself, I think the location question is more complicated than it sounds.

If you've spent any time researching plastic surgery in Korea, you've probably heard some version of "just go to Gangnam" repeated like a universal truth. And look — there's a reason Gangnam has the reputation it does. But after going through the process myself and talking to a lot of people who've done the same, I think the location question is more complicated than it sounds.

Why Gangnam Became the Default Answer

The short version: Gangnam and the neighboring Apgujeong area have the highest concentration of plastic surgery clinics in the world. Teheran-ro, Sinsa-dong, the streets around Apgujeong station — you can walk a single block and pass a dozen clinics. That density created a self-reinforcing reputation. Clinics competed harder, surgeons trained there, international patients started going, and the area became synonymous with Korean plastic surgery.

There are also practical reasons it became popular with international patients specifically. The area is walkable, English-friendly, full of recovery-friendly accommodations, and easy to navigate. If you're flying in from abroad and don't know Seoul at all, Gangnam is genuinely convenient.

But "Gangnam" Isn't a Quality Guarantee

Here's the thing that took me a while to fully internalize: Gangnam is a location, not a standard. There are hundreds of clinics in that area, ranging from genuinely excellent to genuinely mediocre. Being located in Gangnam doesn't mean a clinic is better than one in Mapo, Hongdae, or anywhere else in Seoul.

The density that makes Gangnam competitive also means there's a lot of noise. Some clinics in the area rely heavily on marketing, promotions, and tourist traffic rather than surgical quality. The "Gangnam clinic" label can be used as a shortcut that substitutes for actual research.

Meanwhile, some of the surgeons people end up most satisfied with aren't in the heart of Gangnam at all. They're in adjacent neighborhoods, or in completely different parts of Seoul. The surgeon's skill, aesthetic sensibility, and case history matter far more than their zip code.

What Location Actually Affects

That said, location isn't completely irrelevant. Here's what it actually impacts:

Follow-up logistics. If you're staying in Korea for recovery, being close to your clinic makes follow-up appointments much easier. This is a real practical consideration, especially in the first week or two post-op when you might need to go back multiple times.

Accommodation options. The Gangnam/Apgujeong area has a lot of short-term rentals and guesthouses that cater specifically to medical tourists. If your clinic is outside that area, you might need to think more carefully about where you're staying.

English support. Clinics in areas with heavy international patient traffic tend to have better English-speaking staff. This isn't guaranteed, but it's a pattern worth noting if language is a concern for you.

None of these are reasons to choose a clinic. They're logistics to manage once you've already chosen based on the things that actually matter.

The Framework That Actually Works

Choose the surgeon first. Then figure out the logistics.

This sounds simple, but it's the opposite of how most people approach it. Most people start with "I want to go to a Gangnam clinic" and then look for surgeons within that constraint. The better approach is to identify the specific surgeon whose work you trust, whose aesthetic matches what you want, and whose case history is solid — and then figure out where they're located and how to make the logistics work.

If that surgeon happens to be in Gangnam, great. If they're in Apgujeong, Mapo, or somewhere else entirely, that's fine too. The location is a variable you can solve for. The surgeon is the thing you can't substitute.

When you're ready to start comparing clinics by the things that actually matter — anesthesiologist presence, CCTV policy, English support, procedure specializations — KBeautyFinder's clinic search lets you filter by all of those, regardless of neighborhood.
